'Peace movement' refuses to condemn Saddam's war crimes
Gerard Jackson
The 'peace movement' certainly knows how to show its pro-Saddam colours. Allied PoWs are humiliated, beaten and even murdered by Saddam's thugs and the 'peace movement' says nothing.
Even as Fedayeen and Republican Guards ruthless crushed protestors in Basra and fired on people fleeing the city the 'peace movement' still remained adamantly silent, preferring to slander Bush, Blair and Howard as war criminals rather than the sadist who feeds his opponents into an industrials shredding machine. But that is peacenik morality for you.
Shameless does not describe these 'peace' activists whose every word seems to condemn them as ignorant political bigots driven by anti-Americanism and a hatred of Bush.
Their professed sympathy for the Iraqi people is instantly exposed by their words and deeds as pure humbug.
The hypocrisy of Pamela Curr always springs to mind whenever I see peacenik demonstrators. Addressing a so-called peace rally Greens spokeswoman Pamela Curr accused the allies of terrorising "families living in the city of Basra."
This is the city in which Saddam's thugs who, as a warning to others, hung a woman from a lamp post because she waved to British troops. This Shiite city has been systematically terrorised for years by Saddam because it rose up against him in 1991. About 250,000 Shiites perished in that uprising while peaceniks like Curr and green senator Bob Brown said nothing.
But the silent endorsement of Saddam's war crimes by the fake peace movement is fortunately highlighted by the indiscreet George Monbiot. This Marxist academic not only accused the US of being a war criminal, meaning Bush but also claimed that "The five soldiers dragged in front of the cameras this week should thank their lucky stars they are prisoners not of the American forces fighting for civilisation, but of the 'barbaric and inhuman' Iraqis" (One rule for them…, Guardian 26/3)
A regime that beats and murders POWs, uses civilians as shields, fakes surrenders, beheads women, shreds opponents, shoots down protestors and shells refugee is not barbaric and inhuman according to Monbiot.
I always tell people who are rightly outraged by the lying likes of Monbiot that we should nevertheless be grateful to them because they inadvertently tell us what the left is really thinking. And it ain't pretty, is it, Miss Curr?
